The Sad Story of Severus Snape

It's Day #2 of the Harry Potter Blogfest! Be sure to check out the other excellent bloggers who are dedicating their whole week to The Chosen One:

Today, I'm going to be talking about Severus Snape. Based on the amount of fan art I came across, I know that I'm not the only one who has a soft spot for Sev. When the series first started, Snape seemed to be just another run-of-the-mill villain. Harry was convinced he was out to get him in Sorcerer's Stone, but it turned out to be Quirrell. In Chamber of Secrets, Snape doesn't do much but be cruel to Harry. In Prisoner of Azkaban, he finds out that Snape never got along with his father, but assumes that Snape is to blame. Little does he know...

Poor Snape. I still remember how broken-hearted I was for Harry when he found out that his father had pretty much been a huge bully. It was the first time he realized that maybe Snape had a very good reason to dislike his dad and Sirius. Of course, Harry also couldn't forgive him for what he called his mom...

This picture's kind of awesome. Am I the only one who thinks that Lily and Severus shared a little moment before he became a Death Eater? It just makes you sad for what could have been (of course, if Lily and Snape had married, there would be no Harry Potter).

Sorry, those pictures are just so sweet. I was just telling Colene that I cry every single time I read "The Prince's Tale" chapter in Deathly Hallows. His love and devotion to Lily really break my heart.

When you understand how much Snape loved Lily, you understand why he hates Harry so much. Think about it, Harry is a physical reminder that Lily chose James instead of him. Harry even looks just like James. And Snape is so sure that Harry is just like his father. He isn't even open to the possibility that he might be more like Lily.

Snape wants to hate Harry. Snape knows he is to blame for betraying the Potters to Voldemort, but maybe he's also trying to push a little of the responsibility for that onto Harry. After all, if Harry had never been born, Lily would be safe. Lily died trying to save her son and, for that, Harry seems to bare a little bit of the burden in Snape's eyes.

And Harry hates him right back, with good reason. But it's a credit to Harry's character that, once he knows the whole story and understands everything Snape did for his mother, he puts aside his old prejudice and names his son after Snape.

I absolutely cannot read this line without crying: "Albus Severus, you were named for two headmasters of Hogwarts. One of them was a Slytherin and he was probably the bravest man I ever knew." See, I'm tearing up a little right now.

Harry is able to forgive him. Even though Snape was truly a jerk to him all those years, Harry understands the love he felt and what he lost. After all, Harry lost the same thing -- a life with Lily.

Okay, I'm done getting all weepy over Snape and Lily and Harry. Here's some more awesome Snape related pictures and fan art...
