Gleeful Tuesdays

Today's post about Glee is in honor of rewrites. Even an awesome show like Glee has gone through tons of different characters and ideas and plots directions before hitting on just the right mix. As you know (if you read this blog) I'm currently rewriting my YA novel. These are major, painstaking, horrible, terrifying rewrites, but I really want the book to be good so I'm going to do everything I can to make it the best. The story of Glee inspires me.

The creators of the show initially wrote the idea for Glee as a screenplay. Then they decided they would rather adapt it for television (complete rewrite). When executives at FOX saw the initial script, they liked the idea but suggested the show should have a villain. The writers created Sue Sylvester (a brilliant rewrite). They also had an Indian character named Rajish, in the initial pilot, but when Chris Colfer walked in to audition for the part of Artie, they loved him so much that they changed the character of Rajish to Kurt Hummel (yet another rewrite).

So, see? Glee went through God knows how many rewrites and it turned out great. Rewrites can be good. Seemingly simply suggestions like "add a villain" can lead to Emmys. And following a new idea, even though it means making changes, can turn out awesome.

Here's hoping the rewrite gods will smile on me, too!
