Rolling Sculpture

This morning there was a lot of variety at cars and coffee. Three Ferraris, 2 Maseratis, a brace of Porsches, a Lotus, a Viper, a Corvette, and some others.

A young officer of the local constabulary stopped by with his undercover police Dodge Charger with a Hemi and chatted. He loves the car. At first glance one wouldn't know it was a cop car, but if you look at the police-only issue wheels, you know. Today's photos are of the variety of cars and the undercover police cruiser.

Lots of Rolling Sculpture

It's so hard to choose which beautiful piece of sculpture to feature in this blog on Saturday. Jay Rolfe saw so many beautiful examples of Ferrari, Porsche, Lotus, and other makes this morning at cars and coffee. Today we'll show a classic beauty, a 2001 red Ferrari 550 Maranello. What great lines!

Maybe next week we can feature the red Ferrari BB512i, a red Ferrari 308, a "smiling" yellow Lotus Elise, a blue Porsche GT3 which was just acquired this week, a black Porsche Turbo S cabriolet, or a black Porsche Turbo coupe. They're all beautiful rolling sculpture which we haven't featured yet.

Fast Sculpture

This morning artist Jay Rolfe attended the weekly edition of Cars and Coffee at Dilworthtown. Great cars, predominately Ferraris and Porsches. The photo of the day is of a very unusual Porsche, a Turbo in purple. It may not be the only purple Turbo in existence, but it is the only purple Turbo with a matching purple leather interior, including steering wheel, dash, seats, door trim, rear deck, and headliner. Wow! Purple, purple, purple. It's one of a kind.

Rolling Sculpture - Cars and Coffee

Saturday morning means it's time for Cars and Coffee at the Dilworthtown Starbucks for artist Jay Rolfe. There were a lot of beautiful cars today. A beautiful red Ferrari 550 Maranello, a limited edition yellow Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pininfarina, a black Ferrari 355 Spyder, a red Ferrari 308 GTB, and a red Ferrari 308 GTS. Also a beautiful red Porsche turbo, a striking purple Porsche turbo with an all purple interior, seats, dash, headliner, steering wheel, everything, a 911, and 3 Caymans, blue, gray, and silver. Caymans are a beautiful shape, and they looked good in these colors. There was also a Lotus Esprit, and one of the fastest cars there with over 500 horsepower, the V10 powered BMW M5 (sedan).

For photo of the day we are featuring the black Ferrari 355 Spyder, not because it was the most unusual, but because the owner recently acquired it and brought it for the first time. And it's beautiful.

$10.9 Million Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder

Artist Jay Rolfe has created a 3-D shaped stretched canvas (3DSSC) painting of a Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder in several sizes. The one pictured is 8 feet long. It is also available in 6 feet long and 4 feet long sizes.

Maranello, Italy, is home of the Ferrari factory which, incidentally, artist Jay Rolfe would love to tour. Such beautiful shapes! On Saturday May 17, 2008, in Maranello a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder sold at auction for the highest price ever paid for a vintage car at auction, nearly $10.9 million. It is powered by a V12 engine mounted in the front. This car was once owned by the actor James Coburn. Ferrari made 55 short wheelbase (SWB) California Spyders over a five year period from 1959-1963. They are one of the most beautiful road cars ever. Ferrari also made 51 long wheelbase California Spyders over a similar period and, although handsome, they are not considered as beautiful or desirable.

Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers reading this. You've had the major part in creating a miracle, a child. Congratulations.

Jay Rolfe visited his mother, recently back from Florida, yesterday. His son who lives in the area will be visiting shortly, along with his lovely wife and child. It'll be a great day.

Yes, Ferrari won the Turkish Grand Prix today in Formula One. Ferrari driver Felipe Massa won, with Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen, the current world champion, coming in third. McLaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton was second, and the two BMW Saubers fourth and fifth. Former world champion Fernando Alonso was sixth in a Renault. Raikkonen still leads the driver's championship, and Ferrari leads the constructor's championship.

Rolling Sculpture

Saturday morning is Cars & Coffee time for artist Jay Rolfe and many car buffs from southeastern PA, DE, MD, and NJ at Starbucks Dilworthtown on US 202 at 8 am. A rare Noble, serial number 23, is today's photo of the day. It's a beautiful car, very lightweight, and with a mid-mounted twin turbo V6 that makes it really go.

Other cars today included a Lotus Esprit 25th Anniversary edition V8, Ferrari 360 Modena, Ferrari 328 GTS, Ferrari 308 GTB, Ferrari 308 Quadraporte, BMW M5 V10, Audi RS4 V8, and various Porsche 911 and Cayman. Rolling sculpture

The most unusual piece of rolling sculpture artist Jay Rolfe saw this morning at the weekly car nut get together was a fly yellow Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pininfarina. A barchetta is an open car without a top, not the top down, but there is no top. So nice weather is required. The 550 Barchetta Pininfarina is a limited edition Ferrari, only 448 were made for the world, and is basically a Ferrari 550 Maranello with the top taken off and nice farings behind the head rests. It's a beautiful car, and the yellow stitching on the black leather interior really set that off nicely.

Today's photo is of the limited edition Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pininfarina. This car led the drive through the countryside after the meeting at the coffee shop parking lot.

Stiletto setup

Giclee

Artist Jay Rolfe is getting giclees on canvas produced of some of his paintings. After a lot of time spent on the proof stage over the past two weeks, they are finally printed and look great. Most of today was spent by Jay Rolfe putting together stretchers and stretching the canvas giclees over them. They look great! Before the giclees were ready, artist Jay Rolfe photographed some of his recent paintings.

Ferrari Rolling Sculpture

Again this Saturday morning artist Jay Rolfe viewed some exotic rolling sculpture at the local Starbucks in Dilworthtown PA. You may recall a large group of exotics last Saturday which was in the post on Sunday January 13, 2008. Although several car guys came out today, only one true exotic, a beautiful silver Ferrari 360 Modena, came out. The other guys came in BMW sedans, etc. I assume the reason is the snow we had on Thursday. You can see a pile of snow in the background of the photo of the day. While it had largely melted, there were some spots on the rural roads where snow melt had flowed across the road and frozen in the night. It was still below freezing this morning when the car guys met, so there was some risk to their cars.

Ferrari Gets Glossy

Painting canvas to look like glass ...

Today artist Jay Rolfe painted canvas to look like the glass of the windshields for the Ferraris he's painting. Aside from that, I spent the day rearranging my studio so one can see some of my completed Hyper Representational 3DSSC paintings in preparation for a scheduled studio visit.

Today's photos are two I took yesterday on my morning walk. While I consider myself a painter, I do take many photos and some subjects are rather artistic, such as this tree, one of my favorites. Perhaps one day I'll exhibit some photographs. Meanwhile, I am fortunate to encounter this tree every time I walk in Stroud Preserve. Yesterday was a glorious day as you can see. Today was rainy and foggy, but the rain stopped for a while this morning while we walked.

Hyper Representational 3-D Ferrari Painting

Today artist Jay Rolfe painted more on his 3DSSC (3-D Shaped Stretched Canvas) Ferrari paintings. He painted more Ferrari red, trying to finish up what he started yesterday, and also black like the leather interior, underbody, and tires.

This morning's walk was wonderful, the weather was glorious. Crisp, clear, and sunny. Although it's very early this year - Thanksgiving was the earliest possible date, the 21st - I hung the outdoor Christmas lights as I traditionally do Thanksgiving weekend. It's too early for us to turn them on, but the work is done on a beautiful 50 degree afternoon.

Painting Red Ferrari

Artist Jay Rolfe woke up to 20 degree weather, not only the coldest yet this winter, but perhaps colder than any day last winter too! After his morning constitutional - a walk with his wife Randy Rolfe - artist Jay Rolfe got painting. Paint it red. Sounds kind of like a Rolling Stones tune. Kind of, but the song was Paint It Black.

Creating Ferraris on Black Friday

On Black Friday, artist Jay Rolfe went to his studio and spent the day cutting canvas, stretching canvas, and assembling by bolting together 3-D Stretched Canvas pieces into 3DSSC paintings of Ferraris. Stretching Canvas

Artist Jay Rolfe is stretching canvas for a 3DSSC painting again, and having a tricky time of it. It's taking much longer than usual, with many do-overs. It's the wheel and tire part of the 3DSSC Ferrari sports car that's taking longer than expected. Being small and round and having about 6 inches of depth accounts for the trickiness. Today's photo is of working on the stretching of the canvas. I'll soon be on to painting this 3-D Shaped Stretched Canvas painting.
