Daily Thoughts 8/6/2011

I spent some time on Facebook this morning.  I am trying find local organizations that have done programs with the library and like them.  It is kind of interesting.  I also read some of Nonproft Management 101 A Complete and Practical Guide for Leaders and Professionals.  Right now, I am reading about fundraising.  83% of fundraising comes from individual donors.  I rather like the idea that most fundraising succeeds from building relationships.

I also finished reading The Successful Business Plan Strategies and Secrets by Rhonda Abrams.  I learned that I need to learn a lot more about financial numbers.  This part was quite hard for me.  I get the ideas behind operations, customer service, technology, marketing and sales, but need work on accounting and finance.  I am starting to read Successful Business Research Straight to the Numbers You Need Fast by Rhonda Abrams.  If nothing else, this will help me get a better grasp of how finance works in business. I spent some time looking at Infotrac database, Business and Company Resource Center going over summaries of the electronic publishing business. On Monday, I'll probably spend some time in Lexis, Reference USA and Hoovers to get some more information.

I read a bit more of Blue Ocean Strategy as well.  They are describing how companies like Home Depot, Jet Blue, and Cirque Du Soleil both differentiate themselves and reduce costs at the same time.

David Bowie

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Bowie
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000309/bio
David Robert Jones was born on January 8, 1947 in Brixton, London, England. He is an English born musician, actor, music arranger, record producer best known for his somewhat freaky alter ego Ziggy Stardust in the 1970s, and the band with it, The Spiders.

Man he was cute in the 1960s!!!

People got their 1st taste of Bowie when in July 1969, his song Space Oddity, hit #1 on the UK charts. In 1972, he made a debut as the somewhat weird Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders, a band inspired by the glam rock era of the 1970s. In 1975, he made his 1st American crossover song, Fame, with John Lennon, and his album Young Americans hit #1 on the charts. As the years went on, he got more popular, especially in the 1990s and 2000s, with songs like Let's Dance, Modern Love, Under Pressure, China Girl.

His nicknames include Ziggy Stardust, and the Thin White Duke. In the 1960s, he changed his name from David Jones to David Bowie to avoid confusion with The Monkees lead singer Davy Jones.

Spouse
  • Angela Bowie: March 19, 1970-February 8, 1980, divorced, 1 child
  • Iman: June 6, 1992-present, 1 child
Trademark:
  • Constantly changing appearance
  • Wide ranging vocals
  • His one permanently dilated pupil gives him the appearance of 2 differently colored eyes.
Trivia
  • Both eyes are blue, but due to a fight long ago, one eye is dilated and appears darker
  • Has performed on several occasions with Mick Jagger, Queen, Iggy Pop, Al B Sure!, Tina Turner, Annie Lennox, Nine Inch Nails, Bing Crosby
  • Lied about his bisexuality to give more mystery to himself
  • In July 2004, underwent a triple bypass on his heart
  • Voted #12 on VH1's 100 Sexiest Artists. I really don't know how this one happened, or how Mick Jagger got #4 while Steven Tyler got #21
In the 1960s, he and a bunch of his friends formed a band called the Konrads, and their manager was a guy named Leslie Conn. He quit the band later and joined the Manish Boys, a blues-rock band. He said he dreamed of being like Mick Jagger, and what's funny is that later on, he would do a version of the song Dancing in the Street with Mick Jagger.
This is from the video he and Mick did, for the song Dancing in the Street.

In 1984, Bowie paired up with Mick Jagger and they both did a version of the Martha and the Vandellas hit Dancing in the Street. The video is on YouTube now. He has also gone in to acting. One of the movies he has been in is the movie The Prestige, with Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale, where he played Nikola Tesla. Some of the other movies he was in include Basquiat, which is about Andy Warhol, who he plays, he was in the SpongeBob Squarepants movie Atlantis Squarepantis, he did the voice of the Lord Royal Higness, he played a fashion judge in Zoolander, with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, in Martin Scorcese's 1988 movie Last Temptation of Christ, he played Pontius Pilate, and in the movie Labyrinth, he plays Jareth, the king of the goblins.
Labyrinth
Strangely enough, he looks dead on Andy Warhol!
Zoolander
First time I saw this, I never knew who David Bowie was, I swear!!

Daily Thoughts 8/5/2011

On the train to work, I read a little bit more of The Successful Business Plan. Right now, I am reading about keeping track of technology. I also read some more of Counterinsurgency by David Kilcullen and Blue Ocean Strategy. Right now, I am reading three books at the same time.

Today has been fairly quiet. I checked the donations, updated the Twitter and Facebook account, and checked the displays. This morning, I wrote a summary of the Social Media for Nonprofits conference. It was interesting going over some of the strategies that might work.

Some of the ideas which seemed to stick with me were that all the different communication channels needed to be linked together in a complete plan; Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, email, and website. This plan includes a complete story which people can follow easily so you can raise money and gain advocates. Part of the raising money and gaining advocates included finding people who would spread your message, making sure you have pictures of what you are buying with donations, and keeping thorough track of statistics for all your communications.

This is a list of Slideshare Presentations from Social Media For Nonprofits.  It covers more than what was at the conference.  http://www.slideshare.net/SM4nonprofits/presentations

I have been taking the time to talk to different people about our Social Media strategy.

On the way home, I finished reading Counterinsurgency by David Kilcullen.  This is a very politically charged and interesting book.  I don't really think that I have the military or intelligence background to really comment on the contents.  My undergraduate degree was in cultural anthropology.  I was surprised at the amount of material related to ethnography in military actions.  It made for very interesting reading.

I also spent a little bit more time reading about Blue Ocean Strategy.  It is not so much about competing with other businesses but creating alternative pathways to new markets and reaching out to people who have not used your product before.

Sir Joshua Reynolds, The Reading Boy, 18th Century

Daily Thoughts 8/4/2011

I went to the Social Networking for Nonprofits conference today.  It was one speaker after another.  There was a session by New York Public Library on Geolocation and Foursquare which was quite interesting.  The conference was sponsored by Microsoft.  There was a lot that was covered.

It inspired me to work a little bit more on the Facebook page today.  I also contacted the Friends of the Library about the Facebook and Twitter page as well as emailing a number of people about the new social media tools as well.  I still have quite a bit more to do.

I will work on a more complete writeup tomorrow.  Afterwards there was a reception for the book, Nonprofit Management 101 A Complete and Practical Guide For Leaders and Professioals Edited by Darien Rodriguez Heyman.  There is a very web 2.0 feel to the book.

I also read a little bit more of Blue Ocean Strategy today as well as a bit of the book Counterinsurgency.  It has been very busy.

Movie Review

Carlito's Way
What this movie is basically about is this Puerto Rican drug dealer named Carlito Brigante(Al Pacino) has just been released from prison. He hopes to fly straight outside of jail, but his lawyer, David Kleinfeld(Sean Penn) slowly but surely sucks him back into crime. He unforutunately has to help his cousin Guajiro(John Ortiz) do a drug deal at a bar. Things go wrong and Guajiro is killed and that forces Carlito to shoot his way out. Beofre leaving, he takes the $30,000 he sees on the bar. He then goes to a local bar called El Paraiso, where he hopes to buy into a club run by a gambling addict named Saso(Jorge Porcel) so he can save up $75,000 to retire to the Caribbean.

After a while, he starts to notice a young, up and coming gangster from thte Bronx, named Benny Blanco(John Leguizamo), who thinks he's someone special. He also wants to re-cement his relationship with Gail, a ballet dancer who moonlights as a stripper and was also his girlfriend before he went in to prison.

Benny Blanco

Things go from bad to worse. As it turns out, Kleinfeld has stolen $1 million in payoff money from his Italian mafia client Anthony "Tony T" Taglialucci. Kleinfeld is forced into helping him escape from the Rikers Island prison barge, and he repeatedly asks for Carlito's help. He refuses and one night, under the cover of dark, Carlito, Kleinfeld and Tony T's son Frankie motor out to the prison barge where Tony is. When they get Tony on board, Kleinfeld slits Frankie's throat and Tony is bludgeoned to death and he finally throws both of their bodies overboard. After this, Carlito severs all ties to Kleinfeld. He decides to leave town with his girlfriend Gail. Meanwhile, Kleinfeld is stabbed in the chest by 2 mobsters in his office.
Then things do get worse, as Carlito is arrested by the police and has to talk to District Attorney Norwalks(James Rebhorn), where he plays a tape with Kleinfeld's voice on it making criminal accusations against Carlito. The DA tells him that he is an accomplice to the Taglialucci murders. He then visits his lawyer in the hospital, where he confesses he sold out Carlito. When he entered the lobby, he seen a suspicious man in a police uniform, which turned out to be Tony T's other son Vinnie(Joseph Siravo). He takes Kleinfeld's revolver and leaves the hospital, and when Carlito is gone, Vinnie goes to Kleinfeld's room and kills him.

Carlito goes to the train station to buy tickets for him and Gail, who is now pregnant with his child. When he stops by the club he now co-owns, he is stopped by a group of Italian mobsters led by Vinnie. They plan on killing him, but he manages to escape through a secret exit. This little fight of theire finally ends in Grand Central Station, where Vinnie is killed by police attracted to the scene because of all the gunfire.

By now, Carlito is running to catch up to Gail and his gangster friend Pachanga(Luiz Guzman). He is then somehow shot by Benny Blanco, who was in disguise, who shoots Carlito several times in the stomach with a silenced gun. Pachanga tells the slowly dying Carlito he is now working for Blanco, only to be shot as well. Carlito hands a teary eyed Gail the moeny from the club and tells her to get herself and her unborn child somewhere safe to start a new life somewhere else. As the EMTs ar wheeling him away on a gurney, he looks at a billboard that bears an image of a Caribbean beach and a woman. As Carlito passes away, the billobard comes to life in his mind and the woman in the picture is Gail.

My rating of this movie is a 10 out of 10, a 5 out of 5 star rating. It's a little gory, and has occasional bad words here and there, but is pretty good. Not suprisingly, it has an R rating, so kids may not be able to watch it, but I like it, it's pretty cool, and Al Pacino is one of my fave actors.

Tim McGraw

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_McGraw
Samuel Timothy McGraw was born on May 1, 1967 in Delhi, Louisiana. He is the son of former Philadelphia Phillies baseball player Tug McGraw and is currently married to country singer Faith Hill. So far, he has won 3 Grammys, 14 Academy of Music Awards, 11 CMA Awards, 10 American Music Awards, 3 People's Choice Awards. He has also gone into acting, in movies like The Blind Side, Friday Night Lights, The Kingdom, Four Christmases, Country Strong, and in honor of his grandfather's Italian heritage, he was honored by the National Italian American Foundation, receiving the special NIAF Special Achievement Award at the Foundation's 29th Anniversary Gala.

To be her for one day............

He is of Italian, Irish, German, Scottish-Irish descent. In 1994, he hit it big with the single Indian Outlaw, which was said to cause controversy among Native Americans, but critics said it portrayed them in a good way. Another one of his songs, Don't Take the Girl, became his #1 hit and showed him as a country guy with a good heart. Another one of his singles, Down on the Farm, rose to #2 on the charts. In 1995, he released his All I Want album, which includes the tracks I Like It, I Love It, which hit #1 on the country charts, She Never Lets It Go to Her Heart which rose to #1 on the charts in 1996. Hit top 5 hits that year were Can't Really Be Gone, All I Want is a Life, Maybe We Should Just Sleep On It, and She Never Lets It Go to Her Heart.

His 1997 album Everywhere topped the country charts at #2. 4 of the tracks, Where the Green Grass Grows, Everywhere, It's Your Love and Just to See You Smile stayed on the Billboard Country charts for 42 weeks. At the 1997 CMA awards(Country Music Association), Everywhere won for Best Album of the Year

In 1999, his A Place in the Sun album debuted. It had, yet again, more award winning tracks, such as Please Remember Me, Something Like That, My Best Friend, My Next Thirty Years, Some Things Never Change. It went to #7 on the country charts.

In 2000, he released a Greatest Hits album, which had all of his good songs on it. When in Buffalo, N.Y., him and Kenny Chesney had gotten into a little bit of trouble with the police after Chesney attempted to ride a police horse. McGraw came to his aid when police officers thought that Chesney was stealing and tried to arrest him. They were both arrested and charged with assault. Later on, Faith Hill dressed as a police officer and led McGraw off stage.

His 2004 album Live Like You Were Dying was a tribute to his father Tug McGraw, who died of a brain tumor the year before. This album spent 7 weeks on the charts. In late 2004, he did a duet with hip hop artist Nelly, Over and Over, which became a major hit and landed on the Top 40 charts for 10 weeks.

On Oct. 20, 2009, he released his Southern Voice album. On Nov. 10, 2010, he presented the awards at the 44th Annual Country Music Awards.

He first caught the acting bug when he appeared on a 1995 episode of the Jeff Foxworthy Show, playing Jeff's rival. In 2004, he played the overbearing father of a running back in the movie Friday Night Lights. His first lead role, however, came in 2006, when he played the father of the main character Rob in the movie Flicka. Then in 2009, he appeared alongside Sandra Bullock in the movie The Blind Side. Both him and Bullock played Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, who raised a homeless teen named Michael Oher, who would later go on to be a famous football star. This movie was also based on a true story.

He also enjoys giving to charity and helping out. When Hurricane Katrina hit, him and his wife started collecting supplies to help those affected by the storm .
